He recently voted against a policy which would prohibit animal shelters from euthanizing dogs based on breed.

Delegate Orrock,

And I am deeply disappointed in your decision to vote against the Animal welfare house bill. And I really surprised at the comments you made to justify your decision.

Despite the incorrect picture painted by the media, you cannot judge a dog strictly by its breed.

As a German Shepherd owner, I constantly have to remind some people (usually the ones who watch too much TV) that while this breed excels in roles in the Military and Police, they also make tremendous family pets. Not to mention therapy and search and rescue dogs.

One of the nicest dogs Ive ever met was a pit bull rescued from the pound. She was kept isolated from the other dogs at the ranch where she lived. Not because she was aggressive, but to keep the other dogs from harassing her and stealing her food. She was the only dog there that was cat friendly!

Your vote will prevent dogs like her from ever getting a chance. That is simply asinine.

This type of bill perpetrates the false premise that certain breeds are more dangerous. Any dog raised irresponsibly can become aggressive, including what you call, "more favorable dogs."

You said that shelters have a finite amount of space. Yes, this is correct. However, enacting breed specific policies is not the answer.

A much better plan would be to enforce spay and neuter legislation and promote responsible pet ownership.

The AKC just released its list of most popular breeds in the USA.

German Shepherds are now number 2, climbing up one spot from last year's ranking. The GSD beat out the Yorkshire Terrier for second place, followed by Golden Retrievers and Beagles. Labrador Retrievers maintain their number one standing. German Shepherds were tops in the 1920's when Rin Tin Tin made the breed a household name. After World War II, their popularity declined.

According to AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson, "...the German Shepherd Dog has gained ground recently, quite possibly due to the increased attention they receive for their security efforts at home and abroad. Hailed as the world's leading police, guard and military dog, this energetic and fun-loving breed is a loyal family pet, ideal companion and dependable K-9 partner when duty calls."

I was feeling pretty down after posting the sad story about Buddy on my blog, and was trying to get my mind off of it.

I try my best to provide for you the GSD resources that you want and need. So, I regularly glance at my website stats info to see where improvements are needed.

This is what made me smile... Someone found my website using the following phrases: "how to say i love you in dog language" and "dog body language for i love you." While the page addresses dog body language, it does not specifically tell you how to do that... yet.

But, that was just what I needed to get me out of my slump.
