Breed founder, Captain Max von Stephanitz, set about looking for a dog that existed only in his mind:

"...firm of nerve, attentiveness, unshockability, tractability, watchfulness, reliability, and incorruptibility together with courage, fighting tenacity and hardness."

At a dog show, he discovered a clever and tenacious wolf-like canine and knew he was onto something. His dream was soon realized and the amazingly versatile German Shepherd became reality.
