Is my female puppy Maya small??

by Melanie
(UK)

My GSD is 11 weeks old and only weighs 15 lbs. She is a very picky eater and I am having a hard time getting her to eat. Worried it is going to affect her growth.

Well Maya is 10 months old now and weighs in at 55 lbs. Still a bit behind the charts but she looks well built.

Another update, she is 4 1/2 months old now and weighs 35 lbs 9.2oz

She is going to a small gal but with a BIG attitude as she has already proved how loyal she is to me and my children.

I have tried Science Diet Dry and canned, Pedigree Dry and Canned, Beta Dry Food, heck I have even tried the Raw Food Diet and she just takes one small bite and runs away. I have tried moistening her food with water, milk and even gravy to no luck. I have now left a bowl of dry food out 24/7 and she does go and pick at it thoughout the day.

I have taken her to the vet and he says she is not too thin so he isn't worried and to continue with what I am doing. I have just popped Maya on the scale and she now weighs 17 lbs 8.6oz and she is 12 weeks tomorrow.

Maya - picky eater.....
by: Gracie Lee's Mom

Do not worry. If Maya has been vet checked and is otherwise deemed healthy with no worms, etc., then there are a few easy things you can do to help her along.

When we brought Gracie Lee home she was a picky eater as well. I started her on a puppy multivitamin which can be bought at any of the large pet shop chains and I added a little warm water to her puppy chow and it did wonders. It softened the food and she was smiling!

She ate the warmed/moistened puppy chow for about 3 weeks before I put her back on the dry. Good luck and don't worry! :)

What type of food are you feeding her?

Make sure you are feeding her the best complete food especially for growing pups. Some GSD's are fairly slow to grow, depending on their bloodlines.

They usually "make up" eventually. But some GSD's are smaller than others, again depending on the breeding. I know males of only 30 kg at maturity and then others can reach over 50 kg. My boy of 9 is 50 kg and was always on the large side. My 10 month old male pup is about 37-38 kg but has not got the "bone" of my older lad so will never be as big and heavy as him.

Although I would agree that 15 lb is very small for an 11 week old pup. A good size pup would weigh that at 7-8 weeks old.

If you are too worried about her, I would get her checked over by the vet.
