I'm a 67 yo retired deputy sheriff. widower with grown children, my days brightened by 2 GSDs. I live in the Pacific NW. My 7 yo female is a joy; my @ the time 14 mo male was a work in progress.

Last summer, I had an unfamiliar, rather battered car pull up in my unmarked driveway and a young driver get out. From my porch I could see her face looked bruised and she was crying. She asked my name and when I told her, smiled a little and said "good".

She asked if she could get her baby out and when she sat the car seat and baby on the grass, the dogs literally wrapped themselves around the seat, heads up and vigilant, without a command. Turns out I'd arrested her mother's batterer, 20 or more years ago. I called my old office and asked for a deputy; before he arrived I saw her into the house, made them comfortable. Both dogs stayed glued to the baby, without a command.

Oh, and a neighboring county arrested the ex-boyfriend for home invasion and the domestic violence assault.

Yeah, they're keepers.
